Be a leader

as a cheerleader, you're so much more than an athlete. You're a leader in your school, community, group of friends-basically everywhere you go. Plus, you're so VK-ible, that more is expected of you than your peers when it comes to grades, personality and performance. It can be challenging to live up to the high expectations others have of you, but it's not impossible - it's all about making smart choices.

Team captains have to do this every day. It's not easy to lead your peers, and as much as being captain is an honor, it's also a big responsibility! As the crew chiefs of their team and the right-hand of their coaches, captains have to make decisions based on what's best for the squad, whether or not it's the most popular course. In high school, my best friend and I were our squad's co-captains. We ran a tight ship (No gum! Jewelry off! Work those hip flexors!), and let me tell you, some of our teammates were less than thrilled with us when we acted like mini-coaches. But in the end, they respected us because we always tried to do what was best for the team and our school. College cheerleader and captain Alicia Chouinard offers some great first-hand advice for leading your squad in "The Captain Files" on page 65.

A captain's job gets tougher when it comes to dealing with cliques on your team. Not all cliques are bad, but when they are, you can feel like it's straight out of a scene from Mean Girls. You don't have to be BFFs with every member of your team, but you do need to be a cohesive, supportive unit. If you hear nasty gossip, see disparaging posts online or catch wind of major rumors, help nip them in the bud! Not only is it the right thing to do, but it could also keep your squad from tearing itself apart. After all, if people were talking behind yourback, wouldn't you hope one of your trusty teammates would step in? You absolutely have to read "There's No 'Clique' in Team" on page 55.

A new cheer year is about to kick off, which makes right now the perfect time to stop bad cliques before they start with some big time B-O-N-DI-N-G. Check out The Brand New Bunch" on page 6 1 , and give your teammates a little TLC. After all, the team that plays together stays together!

DIARY OF A CHAMPION: BY HEATHER RECORDS

AC'S April 2009 Cheerleader of the Month, Heather Records, dishes on what it was like to cheer on Team USA at the International Cheer Union (ICU) World Championship.

RUMOR HAD IT...

I first heard about Team USA through my coach. I researched the tryout process and found out that I had to make a videotape showcasing all my stunting, tumbling, Baskets and pyramid skills. I worked with a few of my teammates to create the video, which also included a short interview section. I filled out a written interview and sent a$25 deposit with the video. Then I waited (for what seemed like forever) for an invitation to try out!

GETTING THE GREEN LIGHT

The suspense was killing me, but about a month after I sent my tape I got the e-mail inviting me to Louisville to try out. I was ecstatic! Tryouts were on December 7th and only lasted aday, but they covered all types of stunts, and we each had to show our tumbling skills. The process actually wasn't stressful, and it was great working with new people from across the country.

We were told we'd be informed via Facebook or e-mail if we made the team. About a month later I received a phone call telling me I'd made theteam! I couldn't believe I'd be representing the United States at the ICU World Championships! My family, friends, school and teammates were all so proud of me because I was the only person from the state of Delaware to make the team.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

I traveled to Louisville again in April for a week of practice. We had practice every day from 9 am to 12 pm and then again from 2 pm to 5 pm. We started to partner up and work on potential sequences for the routine right away. The stunters were so strong and the tumblers were unlike anything I had ever seen before.

The flat abs diet: use our six eating strategies to get a sleeker belly

* Focus on balanced eating. For best results, eat at least three to five 4-ounce servings of veggies (15-25 grams of carbs); two to four 4-ounce servings of fruit (30-60 grams of carbs) and about 1 cup (8 ounces cooked or 2 ounces dry, or 2 slices of bread) of whole grains per meal (90 grams per day).
* Make sure you eat enough calories, from complex carbs, lean protein and healthy fats. If you don't get an adequate number of calories (most women require at least 1,800 per day to lose weight, 2,000 to maintain and 2,400 or more if they're very active), you risk temporarily lowering your metabolism, which can also bring on bloating.
A good guideline: Don't cut any more than 250-500 calories below what you need to maintain your weight, advises C. Wayne Callaway, M.D., a metabolic specialist in Washington, D.C.
Tip 3. Drink up!
Many women believe that drinking too much water will give them puffy abs, but just the opposite is true. 'Even though we associate water with being bloated, drinking more water can help to flush sodium out of the body, and that reduces the bloat," said Jeff Hampl, Ph.D., R.D., nutrition researcher and assistant professor at Arizona State University.
flat abs recipes
Now that you've got the perfect tips for flatter abs, you need the perfect meals to go with them. Each dish here is crammed with fiber so you'll benefit from the bulk, fill and chew factors.
Every recipe also has a good balance of carbs, protein and fat. Check out the low sodium numbers, which are right where you need them to be to prevent bloating, as well as the calorie counts, and make sure you choose your leanest meal at night, when calories should be their lowest.

Scope mounting and sighting in: here's how to do it right the first time

Warped and bent scope bodies, scarred and marred finishes, cracked lens, lost turret caps, at least one scope mounted backwards, and certainly the wrong mounts and rings. Every year prior to hunting season, gun shops and gunsmiths are faced with doctoring the mistakes of incorrectly mounted scopes. Unfortunately, scope mounting faux pas like these are more common than you might imagine.

Degrees in nuclear science, physics, or engineering are not required to successfully mount optics on your hunting rifle. Anyone possessing basic motor skills (I barely fail into this category), and the ability to follow simple instructions can achieve professional results the first time.

All that's needed is a few simple tools, a place to work, and the desire to do it right. Let's examine the steps required to successfully and professionally mount your favorite optics on a hunting rifle. When we've completed this task, we'll visit the range and learn how to properly sight in our rifle.

A Clean, Well-Lighted Place

To start, we need a place to work. If you don't have a corner of the house that belongs to you, boldly commandeer the wife's kitchen table -- just make sure she's not home. Next, we'll require a sturdy platform to work from. Having your brother-in-law hold the rifle steady while you work is asking for trouble, hurt feelings and scratched firearms. Gun vises abound on the market and are relatively inexpensive. Just make sure you choose one that holds the firearm securely and will not scratch your expensive investment.

Most rifles leave the factory with filler screws resting in the scope base holes. Remove them using a properly fitting screwdriver. Next, we'll want to clean any grease or oil that may have accumulated in the holes to insure the base screws thread securely. Aerosol gun scrubbers and blasters, manufactured by Birchwood Casey, Break-Free and others work well for this chore. It's also a wise idea after you've done this, to apply a thin coat of oil onto the receiver where the mount will rest, to prevent possible rust.

The attractions of the city of angels

This city packages everything it has so attractively that anyone who visits will always want to return.

Bangkok, known as the “City of Angels”, is truly an ideal city for tourists. It’s a dynamic city, able to motivate visitors with a wide range of options: it offers the down-to-earth traditions of the city’s residents, while at the same time inviting the elite to enjoy the many aspects of progress that have made it a famous metropolis.
One of Bangkok’s greatest strengths is its strategic location in the heart of Southeast Asia, a region with rapid economic growth. Making use of this advantage, Thailand does a very good job of selling its capital city to tourists.
You can’t go anywhere in Bangkok without encountering tourists enjoying the city’s rhythms, or so it seems. Even outside the peak tourism seasons, the major attractions, such as the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun and the Chao Phraya, are swarming with tourists.
Many visitors treat Bangkok as more than just the gateway to other well-known tourism venues in Thailand; it’s also a comfortable “living room” that greets guests with a warm welcome.
To provide greater convenience, over the past decade Bangkok has supersized many of its facilities. For example, in 2008 Suvarnabhumi Airport handled more than than 76 flights per hour, with 45 million passengers and three million tons of cargo passing through the main terminal that year.
Bangkok’s decision to make itself into a modern, pleasing and sophisticated city deserves to be acknowledged, because in doing so, it did not simply throw out its past. The city still has 400 Buddhist temples (most Thais are Buddhists), providing a calming, even magical atmosphere in the bustle of the metropolis.
This is immediately evident when you start your visit at the 88-floor Baiyoke Sky Hotel, which at 309 meters is the tallest tower in Thailand. After buying your ticket, you’ll be whisked to the 77th floor observation desk to enjoy the panorama of Bangkok. If that doesn’t satisfy you, you can then proceed to the 84th floor and experience the city from the Revolving View Point, which also contains much useful information; such as, the distance between Bangkok and Jakarta is 2312.75 kilometers, or 1437.13 miles.
From up here, glassed in amidst the chill winds, you can comfortably see all that Bangkok has to offer. Several other tall new buildings can easily be spotted, such as the Lebua Hotel in the State Tower, with its famous rooftop restaurant, Sirocco. This restaurant offers fine dining in elegant surroundings with stunning views of Bangkok at night – a special treat for those with fat wallets and suitably stylish attire.
Nevertheless, Bangkok has a million other facilities waiting to be explored. Looking out from Baiyoke, you can easily pick out another new high-rise hotel, Centara, equally prestigious and with a similar rooftop restaurant.
Just as Bangkok has enhanced itself with diverse new eating venues, it has also added another popular tourist attraction – shopping centers. One that catches your eye from the Revolving View Point is the Crown Atrium, which is connected with the King Power Complex, a mega-complex located on Sri Ayuthaya Rangnam Road, a prestigious shopping area in downtown Bangkok. It offers an exclusive combination of art and culture, a modern theater, hotels, entertainment centers, and enough shops to satisfy the most hardcore shopper.
King Power has duty-free shops featuring branded goods with a very convenient shopping arrangement. Simply show your passport and your ticket home, pay for the goods, and you can pick up your purchases at the airport as you board your flight – no need to carry them around with you while you’re on holiday.
This concept of duty and tax free shopping was first introduced to Thailand by a businessman from India, Kun Vichai Raksriaksorn, in 1989, but the cornerstone of the King Power complex was laid by his brother, Khun Vivat Raksriaksorn, in 2004.
It’s easy to spot plenty of other shopping centers from Baiyoke Tower. In another elite business district is the Siam Paragon, opposite the high-speed train station. This shopping center, a favorite with well-to-do young people, is right next to another equally trendy new mall, Central World, the largest in Southeast Asia. Another favorite for those with a few baht in their pockets is The Emporium, near the upper middle class district of Sukhumvit Road.
But most tourists prefer the legendary Mah Boon Krong (MBK) Center, a lively eight-floor mall with over 2000 shops selling virtually everything.
When you manage to peek between the tall buildings, you can see the city’s main river, the Chao Phraya, and on one of its banks a large, lovely temple, Wat Arun. Another excellent way to see Bangkok is from the Chao Phraya itself, by renting a boat for a short cruise – 20 minutes or longer, up to you. For many tourists, a trip along the Chao Phraya in a traditional prau is a must – an essential experience in the Venice of the East.
The Baiyoke Tower stands in a very busy district, but another equally lively part of town is the dynamic China Town, home to many of Thailand’s ethnic Chinese community and the center of the annual Lunar New Year celebrations. In China Town you can see Wat Traimit, a temple completed in 2008 that contains a large Buddha statue made of solid gold.
A tour guide told us that the people of China Town recently raised funds to rebuild this temple as a present for King Bhumibol Adulyadej on his eightieth birthday. To adorn its interior, they moved in the historic 5.5-ton gold Buddha statue, which dates from the Sukothai period over 700 years ago.
Previously, this statue, named Prakut Maha Suwan Patimagon, was housed at Wat Rakhang. It was believed to be made of plaster, covered with gold paint. It turned out that the statue had been coated in cement so that it would not be stolen by the Burmese, with whom the Sukothai kingdom was often at war. When the statue was moved some years ago, it fell and suffered some damage to the nose, which revealed that below the plaster, the statue was actually solid gold.
This four-story temple has a small museum that relates the history of China Town and the life of its people. One local Chinese resident has sponsored a set of wax statues in part of the museum. Like the many other temples in Bangkok, this one is always full of tourists and monks visiting from many countries and performing their devotions in a spirit of unity.
Just two hours outside Bangkok, visitors can head to Damnoen Siduak to see the Ratchaburi floating morning market. It’s best to go early, so you can see the activity before too many other tourists get there. Bangkok also has its own floating market, Taling Chan, but Ratchaburi is larger and even more colorful and exciting.
The vendors selling from their boats at Ratchaburi seem to be more interested in getting tourists to interact with the traditional atmosphere than in aggressively hawking their wares. Naturally, this is a very successful tactic to entice and appeal to visitors, and just one more reason why visitors always want to come back to Thailand.

I will still be here next season: Ancelotti

Associated Press
LONDON

Chelsea's match at Portsmounth on Wednesday could be the turning point in the club's challenge for the Premier League title - and coach Carlo Ancelotti's future.

However, Ancelotti confidently says he will still be Chelsea manager next season even if he fails to win a title with the club this year.
Ancetolli acknowledged after last week's 1-0 loss to Inter Milan that he was under pressure but told Italian newspaper La Stampa that the blues will do well in the remainder of the season.
But, ancetolli says his "future will definitely be at Chelsea next year in defendent of results".
Chelsea was eliminated from the Champions League last week and has dropped to third place behind Manchester United and Arsenal after Sunday's 1-1 draw againts Black burn took its record to four points from three matches.
With Portsmouth putting up a spirited fight againts almost certain relegation, Chelsea's trip to Fratton Park suddenly looks anything but straightforward.
"I don't know how many points we need to win the title but I know we have to win on Wednesday and then prepare game by game," Ancelotti said. "It will be more difficult now to win the title but it's not impossible.
"It's not an easy moment for us and we have to maintain our confidence and our composure."
Chelsea spent much of the season in first place but, since losing its 38-match unbeaten home streak to manchester city on Feb. 17, has spent only one day there.
Chelsea is now four points behind defending champion united and two behind Arsenal, both of which have played 31 games to chelsea's 30.
But Ancelotti is keeping any planned tactical tweaks to himself and is publicly urging his players to work harder.
"The difficult moment started against Manchester City. We lost an unbelievable game and now we are inside this moment and have to win because that is the only solution to go forward," Ancelotti said. "collectively we need to work together and stay compact."
Led by former Chelsea coach Avram Grant, Portsmouth looks doomed to demotian by its ninepoint penalty for breaching financial regulations but has won two of its past four premier league matches and reaches the FA Cup semifinals.
"We're professionals and it doesn't matter what happens," portsmouth striker Nwankwo Kanu said. "We always have to go out there and give our best.
We don't want the fans to come out here for us only to see us not play well. And when you're playing at home, you have to try to make them smile. They've paid a lot of money to come and watch us."
Chelsea is 10 points clear of Tottenham, which is in FA Cup actioan on Wednesday and could lose fourth place to Manchester City.
While Spurs host Fulham in a quarterfinal replay, City hosts inform Everton in one of Wednesday's four Premier League matches.
Everton has lost just one of its pat six lauge matches to give it self a shot of European qualification, while City has been hugely inconsistent over the past two months failing to win consecutive premier league games since Jan. 11.
City can move into the final Champions league berth for the firts time in a month with victory over everton, but will probably have to do so without Joleon Lescott after the former Everton defender hurt his hamstring in the warm-up for sanday's 2-1 win at fulham.
